When the Secret Sydney team decided to try out Virtual Room, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but we ended up having an absolute blast. From the moment we walked in, it felt like we were about to be whisked away into another dimension, and that’s exactly what happened. Virtual Room blends the best parts of escape rooms and cinematic virtual reality into a fully immersive, collaborative adventure—no sitting, no button-mashing, just full-body movement in your own dedicated VR space. Whether you’re solving puzzles across ancient temples, travelling through time, or battling intergalactic foes, it feels like stepping inside a movie. From the polished tech to the staff who guide you through every step, Virtual Room delivers a new kind of group experience that goes far beyond the usual gaming session. Read on for our full review.

Two characters from Asterix: Mission Potions!, one of the game options at Virtual Room.

The staff at Virtual Room deserve a shout-out right away: incredibly friendly and very helpful. Before we jumped in, they chatted with us about our previous experience with VR and suggested which mission would be the best fit. They then gave a full safety and technical demonstration to make sure everyone felt comfortable. Once the briefing was done, we each went into our own little “VR room”, a space where we could walk around while wearing the VR headset. We didn’t need to worry about not being able to see each other—the headsets came with built-in microphones and speakers so we could talk to each other, strategise, laugh, and react in real time as we played and interacted with each other as avatars in the game.

Our team chose Asterix: Mission Potions!, one of Virtual Room’s most magical missions. From the start, we felt like apprentice druids in a Gaulish village under threat, tasked with finding the missing ingredient for the legendary potion. The world-building was next-level. We foraged for clovers in forest glades, scrambled around a quaint magical workshop, mixed ingredients, and even joined a big battle against Roman invaders.

What stood out most was how interactive everything was. We manipulated objects as if they were real: stirring cauldrons, gathering herbs, wielding weapons. For the gamers in our group, who were used to thinking outside the box, the little puzzles were a breeze; but even for those less experienced, the missions felt rewarding and accessible. After playing, we walked out buzzing. We really felt like we’d achieved something as a team in an epic fantasy world.

Part of what made the experience extra special: you can take photos from inside the game. At the end, Virtual Room emails you those in-game snapshots so you leave with keepsakes. After you’ve finished, there’s also a photo space where you can don props, strike a pose, and use VR effects to embellish your picture. Our team looked ridiculous in the best way possible, and we loved it.

If you’re looking for a memorable group activity in Sydney, whether it’s for a friends’ day out, a team-building session, or just a fun date, Virtual Room is a brilliant pick. It’s not just an escape room; it’s a fully immersive, cinematic adventure that challenges your mind and brings out your inner adventurer.  Gather your friends, pick a mission, and experience a 40-50 minute journey you won’t forget.
