After two seasons that earned rave reviews from critics and viewers alike, Peacock announced it will not be bringing back “Poker Face.”
Despite the cancellation by Peacock, series creator Rian Johnson plans to find a new home, but with a major twist.
If the series does get picked up for a third season somewhere else, it would come with Peter Dinklage replacing Natasha Lyonne in the lead role of Charlie Cale, according to Deadline.
“Poker Face” debuted on Peacock in 2003 to critical acclaim. That first season was one of the streaming platform’s most-watched series and earned a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 2 was a hit with critics as well, but ratings were down from the first season, according to Deadline. That, combined with production costs being steep, led to its cancellation, according to the report.
“We’ve been germinating this next move together since writing the season two finale,” Johnson and Lyonne said in a statement to Deadline. “We love our ‘Poker Face’ and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling. Give us a beat and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway.”
Johnson told the news outlet that his plan is to have a new actor portray the lead role of Charlie Cale every two seasons. That would involve Dinklage, known best for his role in “Game of Thrones,” taking on the character in Season 3, if it is picked up elsewhere.
HBO has had discussions on if the show would make sense there, according to Yahoo.
“It’s funny because we heard the original take, and when I heard that Peacock wasn’t moving forward, we were curious,” Yahoo reports HBO and HBO Max content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys as saying. “So we’ve had conversations, but I don’t know which way it’ll go. But I think Rian is a fantastic filmmaker, and I love the idea of Peter Dinklage.”
