Chaz Mostert has claimed the 2025 Supercars championship but his title win will remain mired in controversy at Adelaide’s inaugural grand final.
It was Mostert’s Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Ryan Wood who made contact with championship favourite Broc Feeney just seconds into the race – sending the Triple Eight star from first to last.

And despite WAU team boss Ryan Walkinshaw claiming the incident was “Broc’s fault” – after he and his team were seen wildly celebrating the moment in the garage, Wood was slapped with a 15-second time penalty.
But that contact opened the door for Mostert, who had entered the final race just 23 points adrift of Feeney, to sit ahead of the pack and finally shed his championship bridesmaid tag.

While he finished the race second behind Penrite Racing’s Matt Payne, Mostert claimed the 2025 championship with just four wins to his name – compared to Feeney’s 14 – under the new Supercars finals system implemented for the first time this year.
“I can’t believe it – I’ve been racing for so many years. You start to doubt it year after year,” Mostert said after the win.
“I’ve always believed I could do it – thank God for finals series hey!
“Finals format played to our strength … never gave up. A few curveballs here and there. Just grit, determination and a little bit of luck.
“Today’s our day.
“Just never thought this would happen when you’re 33 years.
“You just never give up.”

And while it was jubilation for Mostert, Sunday proved a day of “devastation” for 23-year-old Feeney, who finished 20th.
The Wood incident was only the start of his heartbreak as first a slow pit stop and then a failing engine ensured there would be no fairytale finish for Feeney after one of the most dominant seasons seen in Supercars history.
“When mechanical failures or mechanical gremlins grab you, it demonstrates the cruelty of this game,” Fox Motorsport’s Mark Skaife said.
“It’s a tragic tale.”
Earlier on Sunday Feeney had secured a record 19th pole position, to go with those 14 race wins.

But it mattered for little as he engaged with Wood on that opening lap and the rest became history.
Triple Eight team boss Jamie Whincup described Wood’s actions as “grubby” but Walkinshaw was adamant it was Feeney who initiated the contact.
“He very clearly had Woody alongside him and pushed Woody into the wall!” he told Fox Motorsport.
“You can see Woody hit the wall and then go into Broc.
“Woody’s got nothing to lose – he was down the side of him … He can’t exactly just disappear.
“Entirely Broc’s fault.”

It was a brutal finish to 2025 for Feeney who didn’t need to win on Sunday – he just needed to be only two spots behind closest rival Mostert.
Mostert’s win ensures he becomes the first Mustang to claim the championship since Scott McLaughlin back in 2020.
