Lawyers at Allens now have a choice of around half a dozen AI tools to speed up their legal work, but far from cutting the number of staff required, the firm has boosted fee-earner numbers to a record high.

The rise in non-partner fee-earners at Allens, replicated at the majority of firms surveyed in the second-half edition of The Australian Financial Review Law Partnership Survey, suggests that the more artificial intelligence is used within a law firm, the more lawyers are needed to vet the technology’s outputs.
