Netflix no longer lets subscribers with recent Chromecast and Google TV Streamer devices share shows and movies to their TV from a smartphone or tablet. However, the feature remains for some older Chromecast products.
Netflix quietly rolled out the change in November updating a support page to say, “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix.”
The change was first spotted by Reddit users, with Android Authority later reporting Netflix’s official comments.
The streamer appears to be encouraging users to embrace its native app to control what you watch. One user on Reddit said, “Customer service told me “if the device has its own remote, you cant cast”. They said it was to make customer experience better, even if it might make mine worse.”
It’s unclear which version of the app removed the feature, but if you’ve updated over the last two weeks, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to continue to access casting on modern hardware.
Netflix’s support page notes older Google Cast compatible devices will continue to work, such as the brand’s Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra. That’s likely because these devices aren’t able to run the app natively and each relies on a smartphone or tablet to do the heavy lifting.

However, you won’t be able to use this feature on Netflix’s ad-supported plan. You’ll need to pay for a higher subscription tier to be able to continue to access the service. This change was first introduced earlier in 2025 across all casting devices, and it remains in place for older hardware.
Netflix has built troubleshooting guides for older Google Cast devices, suggesting the functionality is set to remain for the foreseeable future.
