Australia is about to name its starting XI for the second Ashes Test against England at the Gabba, with Josh Inglis recalled to bat in the middle order and Pat Cummins in the mix for a stunning last-gasp return, according to multiple outlets.

On Tuesday, Cricket Australia confirmed that veteran opener Usman Khawaja had been ruled out of the Brisbane Test due to a back injury, opening the door for Travis Head at the top of the order after his Perth century heroics. Inglis, who made a ton in his very first Test innings in Sri Lanka, will take Head’s normal middle 0rder spot and place his first home Test.

Cummins, meanwhile, was not even named in the Gabba squad but could make a shock 11th-hour return at the expense of either rookie Test quick Brendan Doggett or champion off-spinner Nathan Lyon. He will be given until match day (Thursday, with the later day/night start of 2pm local/3pm AEDT) to prove himself fit — a sure sign the Aussies are desperate to have him for the pink ball game.
