To launch Heroes, a new game mechanic for the global mobile hit Clash Royale, Uncommon Creative Studio Stockholm set out to answer a frequent request from the game’s community: a Clash Royale film. The result is a 8 minute fight sequence, created together with seven directors and production companies across the globe.
As part of an epic new update for Clash Royale, a new troop form, Heroes, introduces powered-up versions of four cards. To officially launch these Heroes in the game, the Uncommon team wanted to match the game team’s ambition with an introduction that felt just as epic. Uncommon partnered with seven production companies, each creating one scene in their own style, to complete an entire short film in parallel.
Each production company was given creative freedom and no information about what the others were doing. They only received the characters they needed to feature, how their scene should begin, and a transition that would connect to the next director’s scene.
This resulted in a diverse mix of styles, ranging from heavy-metal stop motion and 80s live-action dark fantasy to 90s toy commercials and a blockbuster-style fantasy that turns into a food fight. The key to making this work was in the simplicity of the premise, a never-ending fight scene culminating with the introduction of the four new Heroes.
“This project is the result of deep trust between Clash Royale, Uncommon, and every production partner involved. Inviting seven directors to reinterpret our world in their own way felt like a risk, but it’s exactly the kind we’re willing to take. That’s how you get something fresh and genuinely entertaining,” said Gabriel Caramelo, global marketing lead for Clash Royale.
Behind the idea is Uncommon Creative Studio Stockholm, who are behind several of the latest Clash Royale campaigns.
“This is a celebration of craft. No AI has been used, just creative minds collaborating under one very simple premise. We wanted to create something the community would love, but also something that could introduce new players to Clash Royale,” said Max Hultberg, executive creative director at Uncommon Stockholm.
