JAMES Warburton had a rousing speech for the Supercars industry to aim for higher heights off the back of a bumper 2025.
Supercars this year was headlined by rougher racing, a thrilling Repco Bathurst 1000, the introduction of finals, and the birth of the Gen3 Toyota Supra. The category has regularly trumpeted strong crowd and television figures, and has a new broadcast deal in its pocket.
Since returning as CEO mid-season, having previously spent four years (2013-17) at the helm, Warburton has not been shy in describing the improved health of Supercars – but at the Gala Awards, he challenged competitors not to stop now.
“Last time around, my challenge to the Supercars industry was a pretty simple one: that this series was literally the best secret worst told,” he said.
“Returning some eight years later, I have got to say the secret is truly out and the sport is in incredible health.
“The question I think for us all in this room is, is the sport in its rightful place?
“And I would argue, given the passion, dedication and commitment and the show that this room puts on, that you deserve more.
“We can all achieve more by being focused, by being beautified, and really looking at the status quo and whether or not we feel we can build this sport to an even higher point.”
Season 2026 will kick off at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 20-22.
