Some medalists pause with MNCS and Maba Officials after the function.
MZUZU, Malawi — The Malawi Boxing Association’s northern region expressed satisfaction with a regional tournament Sunday that identified boxers for a national competition next year, writes Victor Musongole.
The event at Linde Lounge and Grill featured 30 boxers competing for spots on the regional team.
The Malawi National Council of Sports provided 4.2 million kwacha in sponsorship.
Happy Kumwenda, northern region MABA chairperson, said the competition demonstrated the region’s readiness for national-level boxing.
“We are grateful for the sponsorship which made sure our boxers and fans enjoy the bout,” Kumwenda said. “We have good boxers who can compete on national level and they are ready.”
Kumwenda said the association plans to expand boxing clubs to additional districts in the region and is seeking partners to support the effort.
Felix Yola, northern region senior sports recreation and development officer for the National Council, said the sponsorship aims to develop professional boxing talent.
“We came in because we want to see more boxers rising and doing well in professionals,” Yola said. “We saw gaps in professional boxers, we are impressed with the level of competition.”
The tournament followed a preparatory festival held two weeks earlier. Several bouts ended in technical knockouts.
Gold medalists selected to represent the region include Nyuma Ngwira, Moses Chiumia, Kasimu Kadango, Luthando Sikwese and Evelyn Phiri.
The northern region will host the national tournament early next year.
