The term ‘Olmpico’ is used to describe a rare goal where a player scores directly from taking a corner without any other player getting a touch on the ball.
Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes scored an Olimpico goal on Saturday during their 2-1 win over Burnley.
The term comes from the first ever recorded goal of its kind, scored by Cesareo Onzari in 1924 for Argentina against Uruguay.
Because Uruguay were the current reigning Olympic champions, the goal was described as ‘Gol Olimpico’ and the term Olimpico has been used since.
Prior to Onzari’s strike, goals scored in this manner had come under question, but have been permitted since.
Guimaraes’ goal was the second Olimpico goal in the Premier League this season, after Marcus Tavernier scored one for Bournemouth against Nottingham Forest in October.
A total of 20 Olimpicos have been scored in Premier League history, 12 of which have been since December 2015. The last nine have all been scored by players from either England or Brazil.
Neil Pointon and Ashley Westwood are the only two players in Premier League history to have scored two Olimpico goals.
