GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Albion College women’s basketball team battled across four quarters on Friday evening, but the Britons saw their unbeaten streak snapped by burgeoning national power Calvin University.

Albion (7-1, 2-1 MIAA) kept pace with the Knights (5-4, 2-0 MIAA), who received votes in the latest D3Hooops.com poll, throughout the majority of the tilt, but a big second quarter from Calvin proved to be the difference. The Knights pulled away with a 21-10 barrage during the stanza that the Brits were unable to overcome.

Despite the expanded lead for the home side, Albion kept working as the contest rolled on. The Brits opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run, kickstarted by a three from Payton Baker and punctuated by a free throw make from Meghan Trewhella.

The flurry from Albion cut Calvin’s advantage to eight at 52-44, but the Knights stayed in rhythm to keep the Britons at bay.

Albion forced Calvin into 19 turnovers, which the Brits turned into 17 points. The Knights held the edge on the boards, 40-29. The Britons took the fight to Calvin down low, but Calvin held a 34-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Offensively, Albion was led by Anna Honnen. The junior tallied 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds. It marked the fourth contest this year that Honnen has hit double figures. Ava Guilford and Trewhella added nine points and three steals each. Guilford added five assists and six rebounds to fill out the box score.
