When Bogdan Trineyev took the ice at Canada Life Centre, he became the 89th player from the 2020 NHL Draft and just the second Washington Capitals player from that draft year — Hendrix Lapierre is the other — to play in an NHL game.

But “Bogdan Crosby” accomplished something even rarer with the jersey number he was assigned, which has mostly fallen out of circulation as one of the greatest players in NHL history inches closer to the end of his career.

Trineyev became the first player other than Sidney Crosby to wear number 87 in an NHL game in two years, eight months, and 13 days. The last player to do so before Bogdan was Czech-born forward Martin Kraut on March 30, 2023, who completed a nine-game stint with the San Jose Sharks after a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on January 25, 2023.

Kraut was one of two players other than Crosby across the NHL to wear number 87 during the 2022-23 season, joining center Kristian Reichel, who appeared in two games with the Winnipeg Jets.

Crosby has been the only player in the NHL to wear the number 87 during 10 of his 21 seasons in the NHL (2024-25, 2023-24, 2020-21, 2019-20, 2018-19, 2015-16, 2013-14, 2012-13, 2011-12, and 2010-11). Only eight players other than Crosby have worn the number in an NHL game since the Penguins captain entered the league in 2025-26, and three of them have been Capitals players.

The last player to wear 87 in a Capitals jersey was Liam O’Brien on November 10, 2017, when the Caps played the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Well, that’s kinda poetic, actually.
