The Eels and Storm kicked off one of the most pivotal rounds of the 2025 NRL season.

The Eels, led by Mitch Moses were looking for another upset after taking down the Broncos last week.

The loss of Jahrome Hughes to a dislocated shoulder saw Cameron Munster play a key role for Melbourne in his return to the field after missing Round 21 on personal leave.

Two of the game’s elite playmakers matching skills factored heavily in the action, while the aerial exploits of Xavier Coates proved the difference in the end for the Storm.

Storm: Round 22

Fulltime: It was not pretty – but the Storm get the job done against the Eels, holding on for a 16-10 win. After a fairly high-quality first half, it was a much more scrappy affair in the second for the Storm, with the Eels throwing plenty at them. In the end, Melbourne went to their go-to man in attack, with a well-positioned kick from Munster finding his winger Coates who once again was able to score an impressive – and in this case, match-winning – try.

In the end, the Storm enjoyed 54 percent of the possession with a 38/45 completion rate, making seven errors and giving up 10 penalties. The Eels had a completion rate of 29/39, with a costly 14 errors and seven penalties conceded.

Storm skipper Harry Grant was again one of the better players for his side despite conceding three penalties with a try assist and 37 tackles.

Harry Grant is everywhere tonight

79th min: Well, well, well. Storm give up a penalty in possession, with Harry Grant pinged while at dummy half after he was ruled to have deliberately thrown the ball into a defender on the ground in the ruck.

75th min: Storm get let off the hooker after an Eels error, but Tallyn Da Silva makes it even worse for his side, with his kick of the ball in frustration going out on the full, giving up a seven-tackle set to the Storm.

Xavier Coates Try

70th min: The ever-reliable Xavier Coates gets his job done once again for the Storm, outleaping Lomax to grab a Munster bomb into the left in-goal, catching it in the air and bringing it down to score. Meaney takes over the kicking duties and slots it from out wide, giving the Storm a 16-10 lead.

62nd min: Another escort penalty, but this time it’s for the Storm, but Papenhuyzen who has had a mixed night with the boot misses his shot. Addo-Carr takes it, but can’t get out of the in-goal and Storm get a line drop out. Scores remain 10-10.

55th min: The Eels go for a penalty goal after an unsuccessful captain’s challenge from the Storm for an escort, with Cameron Munster deemed to have changed his line to hamper an Eels chaser. Lomax gets his first kick of the night and it’s 10-10.

45th min: Charlie Guymer goes over out on the right for the Eels … and after repeated looks, the Bunker confirms the try, despite plenty of hands from Storm defenders attempting to hold it up. It was a good effort for Guymer to get over, with deft hands collecting a deflected ball before it hit the ground in the field of play, turning around to get into the in-goal. Lomax misses the kick and the Eels trail 10-8.

Charlie Guymer Try

41st min: A penalty to start the second half, with Will Penisini on report for a ‘chicken wing’ dangerous tackle as Kamikamica was taking the first hit up.

Halftime: An entertaining first half, mostly of high quality, but a few penalties given away for high tackles and a mini-patch of football in the middle of the half when neither side seemed able to hold the ball, with tit-for-tat turnovers. At the break, the Storm – who lead 10-4 – have enjoyed 60 percent of the possession with a 23/26 completion rate, compared to 15/19 to the Eels. Parramatta have made six errors and conceded four penalties, while Melbourne have made four errors and conceded five penalties.

40th min: Interesting end to the half, with the Eels giving up a penalty after Papenhuyzen was pushed off the ball attempting to chase his own chip kick as the halftime siren was sounding. Opting to go for a penalty kick, he has the distance, but skews it offline. Storm remain in front 10-4.

39th min: The Eels have lost the captain’s challenge following an error to Lomax.

36th min: Errors from both side produce multiple turnovers, but it proves more costly for the Eels, with big Tui Kamikamica the next to score, running hard on to a Harry Grant pass and going over almost untouched to dive under the sticks. No problems for Papenhuyzen this time and it’s 10-4 to the Storm.

Tui Kamikamica Try

24th min: A play-the-ball error from Papenhuyzen while trying to get out of their own attacking zone give Parramatta a scrum and they waste no time getting on the scoreboard. Going out to their left, former Melbourne player Josh Addo-Carr storms over for try 151 in the corner to draw scores level. Zac Lomax hits the post with his conversion attempt and it’s 4-4.

Josh Addo-Carr Try

17th min: First points of the game go to the visiting Storm who have had the better of the possession, with try-scoring backrower Eliesa Katoa going higher than the rest to bring the ball down to score. Despite a relatively easy conversion attempt, Papenhuyzen manages to pinball his kick from one upright to the next and out completely. Storm lead 4-0.

Eliesa Katoa Try

Kick off: Papenhuyzen gets the game under way and the Eels have first use of the ball at their home of CommBank Stadium.

Late Mail

Eels: A late swap, with Luca Moretti to start at lock, shifting Dylan Walker to the bench. Back-rower Kelma Tuilagi has served his three-game suspension for a crusher tackle and will return through NSW Cup as Jason Ryles sticks with the same 17 that stunned the Broncos. Jordan Samrani remains in the squad as the replacement player. Josh Addo-Carr has scored five tries in four games against the Storm.

Storm: In a late change, Tui Kamikamica reverts to the bench, with Ativalu Lisati to start at lock in just his seventh game of NRL. Earlier, star playmaker Cameron Munster (personal leave) was named to return to partner with Tyran Wishart in the halves. “They’re both probably similar, their strength is their running game, someone will have to take charge and I think Munster’s up for that. He’ll look forward to the challenge,” coach Craig Bellamy said on Wednesday. Fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is back after four games out with a calf injury. Lazarus Vaalepu is the new replacement player.
