British No. 1 Emma Raducanu is into the third round at the 2025 National Bank Open after a win over American and world No. 32 Peyton Stearns in the second round.
This comes after a strong showing at the DC Open, where the 22-year-old reached her first semifinal of the year. This performance vaulted her up to No. 33 in the world, and she looks to be closer to earning a seed at a major draw for the first time in a few years.
Raducanu’s previous highest ranking came late in 2021 and early 2022 after she surprised many by capturing the 2021 U.S. Open title (as a wildcard entry, no less).
Former world No. 3 and longtime tennis commentator Pam Shriver doesn’t quite think Raducanu is in a place to challenge for the 2025 U.S. Open title.Â
“Obviously, in the last say three and a half years, four years, she’s kind of fallen back into a solid player with some good results during the year,” she admitted.
“But if you just took her resume, take that US Open out, that one tournament out, you would probably say no she’s not going to win one. She might have some quarterfinals, semifinals, but when you know that somebody’s had the mindset to do it once, you always think, sure, they can do it again,” Shriver continued.Â
Raducanu has had a bounce-back campaign in 2025. She’s faced a gauntlet of opponents in Grand Slams, losing to Iga Swiatek in the third round of the Australian Open and the second round of the French Open before falling to Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of Wimbledon.
The young British player broke through with a quarterfinal appearance at the HSBC Championship in her home country before the semifinal jaunt in DC.Â
Raducanu will face Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova in the third round at the National Bank Open, and she’s feeling good about how she’s played.Â

“I’m really happy with how I came through in that match,” Raducanu said of her second-round victory.”I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set and she took advantage, but very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal.”
