MONROE, La. – The ULM men’s basketball team (3-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell in a tough game to the South Alabama Jaguars (9-3, 1-0 Sun Belt) in a tight double-overtime game, 96-92. It’s the first double-overtime game at home since 2014. While the Warhawks got ahead to a 20-point lead, the Jaguars launched a comeback, including a 14-0 run to close regulation, to succeed across two overtime periods.

The Warhawks were able to come across leading in three-point percentage (42%), dropping 19 triples for a Sun Belt team high. ULM also led with 38 boards to South Alabama’s 33 and also collected 22 assists.

Krystian Lewis had a career night, notching 29 points with eight triples, also posting nine rebounds, a block and a steal. Lavell Brodnex had yet another double-double night, his third-consecutive double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 boards. MJ Russell rounded out the double-figure scoring, reaching double-digits for the 11th-straight game to go with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Brodnex started the Warhawks off hot and kept them strong throughout the first half, draining a three for the first points of the game. While the Jaguars were able to quickly catch up and surpass the home team, both teams forced turnovers and steals to keep it tight. Renars Sondors hit a three of his own to tie the game at six, when the Warhawks began to leap ahead. The six of the first seven field goals for ULM were triples, as ULM saw themselves with a 21-15 lead with 11:41 on the clock.

The spark from beyond the arc allowed for a 22-5 scoring run in the middle of the half, reaching a double-digit advantage over the Jaguars. While Chaze Harris tried to keep the road team in the game, ULM was shooting 58% from the floor and 60% from three to continue the lead. 11 forced turnovers for the Warhawks allowed for a six-minute scoring drought for South Alabama as ULM went on another scoring run for the 20-point lead. The Warhawks held on for the 45-27 score at the half, tallying 12 three-pointers in just the first half.

South Alabama began to fight back in the second half, hitting shots early while the Warhawks could not get one to drop. A scoring run allowed for the Jaguars to chip away at the deficit, cutting it in half in the first two minutes. Lewis hit another three-pointer to break the scoring drought as the Warhawks fought to get back in the driver’s seat.

While the Warhawks held the advantage, South Alabama was knocking at the door with a 10-point deficit, forcing turnovers and creating a 10-0 run in the final two minutes to make it a two-possession game. Two unanswered scores in the final minute tied the game at 71, with 10 seconds on the clock and a ULM ball. A block for the Jaguars forced the turnover with three seconds remaining and a missed shot at the buzzer forced overtime.

The Jaguars pulled ahead early with the first shot of the extra period, but a triple from Lewis had the Warhawks back on top in the close contest. Free throws on the Jaguar end gave the lead back to the road team, but Lewis hit his seventh triple to tie the game at 82 with 13 seconds on the clock. After more free throws gave South Alabama the lead again, a foul on the opposite end set up free throw shooting for the Warhawks to tie the game at 84, leading to a second overtime period.

Both teams began trading fouls and free throws in the second overtime period, but the Warhawks were able to pick up the defensive rebounds and collect some points. Lewis’ eighth three-pointer put ULM ahead, but a three-point play on the opposite end kept the Jaguars in front. Adam Olsen hit a triple to reach a two-point advantage with 30 seconds remaining. Unable to drop a shot, the Jaguars walked away with the 96-92 score.

The Warhawks will remain in Monroe for the opening week of conference play, taking on the Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday, December 20. Tipoff against the Cajuns is scheduled for 2 p.m. for ULM’s holiday hoops game.
