Question: Assuming the 49ers trade Mac Jones, does Zach Wilson have the qualities and capabilities that would succeed in the 49ers system?
Answer: I was kind of disappointed the Miami Dolphins decided to go with Quinn Ewers, not Wilson, after benching Tua Tagovailoa this week, because it would have given us a glimpse of how Wilson might look in a Kyle Shanahan-style offense.
He’s got an excellent arm and Brock Purdy-like mobility. But does he have Purdy’s and Jones’ anticipation? That’s what sets them apart and makes them strong fits for Shanahan. Wilson never showed that trait with the New York Jets, perhaps because his elite arm and athleticism meant he was never forced to develop that aspect of his game.
The question, of course, is whether he could improve that under the 49ers’ tutelage. He’ll be 26 in the upcoming free-agency period, which was Jones’ age when they signed him in March.
If Jones is traded, that will be one of the most intriguing 49ers storylines of March: Who will be the latest passer to enter Shanahan’s School for Wayward QBs?
