If it makes you happy (and it will), Skegss has popped into the Like A Version studio to cover a Sheryl Crow classic.
Fresh off a temperature-rising winter tour across Aus, the Byron Bay rockers have turned their hand to ‘If It Makes You Happy’, the American singer’s country-twanged 1996 hit about feeling blue despite her debut album’s success.
“I like her lyrics, she always seems to have fun, comical lyrics,” says Skegss frontman Ben Reed.
“‘Cos she’s got that country-esque storytelling, she paints a good picture, but has a lot of fun with it… She’s a real clever lyricist.”
How did the group land on the track? It wasn’t easy, with the boys saying they were struggling to come up with a solid Like A Version. It makes sense given the band’s first crack in 2019 with Pixies’ ‘Here Comes Your Man’ remains a hit, with Ben saying they’re still asked about the track six years on.
After throwing around a few ideas, Ben remembered his sisters blasting ‘If It Makes You Happy’ on repeat back in the early 2000s.Â
First jam, it all clicked, with the band’s fuzzy surf rock take adding a new dimension to the pop classic. Skegss might just have another fan favourite on their hands.
