ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The fourth annual Rockford Boxing Classic returns Saturday, August 2.
The event allows kids from the nonprofit Rockford Boxing Clinic to show their talents against competition from around the Midwest.
It’s not just a unique event for the city of Rockford, but it’s also held in a unique venue. The Rockford City Market outdoor pavilion gives families plenty of room to bring lawn chairs or purchase ring-side tables
The family-style atmosphere around the ring reflects the age range of the boxers competing.
Boxers range from nine years old to some in their thirties.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and the first fight is at 5 p.m., but the best fighters always come towards the end.
Julian Lugo, a top amateur prospect looking to go pro, will fight Tyrone Johnson in the final fight of the night.
Money raised at the Rockford Boxing Classic goes back to the Rockford Boxing Club and Patriots Gateway Community Center, which has raised $15,000 over the years.
