Louis Rees-Zammit has announced that he plans to return to rugby after an 18-month stint with the NFL. After representing Wales for 32 games, the 24-year old player retired from rugby union in January 2024 in order to play in the NFL. Prior to his departure, he had secured a Six Nations title and taken part in a British & Irish Lions tour.

In an Instagram post, Rees-Zammit said: ‘I’ve got an exciting announcement to make! I’ve decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby! It’s been a great experience, but it’s time to come home. I’ve decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season.’

‘There’s only one thing that’s on my mind, that’s coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can’t explain how excited I am! There’ll be more news to come soon but for now, see you soon rugby fans.’

After spending the 2024 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, he travelled with the team to London for their October match-ups against the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. He temporarily left the franchise at the end of the 2024 season, but soon earned a spot on the active roster for the 2025 campaign.

Reports suggest that Rees-Zammit had a lower back injury that caused him to miss practice, casting doubts over his future with the team.

There’s no official word yet on which club or country shirt he’ll pull on first, but we’ll be watching this space.
