NHL fans on social media reacted as Edmonton Oilers forward David Tomasek is reportedly heading back to Europe.

According to Swedish outlet Värmlands Folkblad, David Tomasek and the Oilers have reportedly reached a mutual agreement to end his contract early, paving the way for a comeback with Färjestad BK in the SHL.

The development frees up salary cap room for Edmonton without needing a trade, providing the team with greater financial maneuverability as the season progresses. The regional Swedish paper initially broke the news, but the Oilers have not yet officially confirmed it.

Here’s how Oilers fans on X (formerly called Twitter) reacted. One tweeted:

“He was better than Trent Frederic.”

Another chimed in:

“Well that sucks, but isn’t particularly surprising given both his output and utilization. All the best to David in the SHL.”

Here are some of the other top reactions on X

“There are some really good parts to his game and it was unfortunate he was snake bitten. He had some really great chances to score at the beginning of the season. All the best to Tomásek,” a third fan wrote.

“Utilization which tracked his inability to perform at NHL pace or apply pressure in any aspect. Enticing preseason. Good luck to him. But not an NHL player,” one opined.
“Kind of surprised they couldn’t trade him to another team even for just futures since he’s waiver exempt,” another wrote.
“I was hoping that he would have a chance with another NHL team,” another chimed in.
