High school boys basketball: Salisbury’s All-Moir team for 2000-24
Published 6:53 pm Friday, December 26, 2025
Record in Moir tournament from 2000-2024: 39-23
Championships: 6 (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2023, 2024)
Worst years: The Hornets were 0-2 in 2002, 2004, 2011 and 2013.
The Hornets ran off a spree of 12 straight wins for four consecutive Moir titles from 2007-10. Jason Causby coached the first three championships in that run.
Albert Perkins is 2-for-2 as a head coach in the Moir. The Hornets ended a long drought by winning in 2023 and repeated in 2024.
Salisbury has a rather unusual Moir winning streak going right now. The Hornets haven’t lost a Moir outing since they were edged by A.l. Brown in the 2019 championship game. There was no tournament in 2020. The Hornets were 2-0 when the tournament was stopped in 2021, and they didn’t play in the event in 2022. They’ve gone 3-0 the last two seasons, so that’s an eight-game Moir winning streak. Since 2015, the Hornets are a terrific 18-5 in the tournament.
All-time Moir team (2000-24):
Darien Rankin — He’s the captain. Rankin helped the Hornets win the Moir as a freshman in 2007. He led the way to titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010, racking up three straight MVPs. No one else has done that. Those were very good Hornet teams and Rankin had plenty of help, but he clearly was the best player each year. He scored 54 in 2008, 47 in 2009 and 48 in 2010.
Juke Harris — He had two excellent games in 2021 before the tournament was stopped. He was MVP in 2023, pouring in 33 in the championship game win against West Rowan.
Myles Smith — You can’t do much more than the 2024 Moir MVP did. Smith scored 27-16-30 in his only Moir tournament, with the 30-point effort coming in an exciting championship game against Carson.
Brandon Abel — He had a great tournament in 2007 on his way to MVP honors. He scored 62 in the tournament.
Trell Baker — Baker was about as good as you can be and not win the tournament. He scored 59 points in 2016 and went off for 70 in 2017.
Honorable Mention: Zay Kesler’s 46 points led the Hornets to the 2019 final. … Cameron Stout lit it up in his 2 games in 2021, scoring 45 points. …Wez Fazia played three of the best games of his career — 15-17-17 — in the 2014 Moir. … Kenny Abel scored 57 points in three games in 2003. … Joe Allen had a 55-point tournament in 2006. … Thad Pryor scored 48 points in the 2000 tourney. … Shamari Spears had a 29-point game in the 2002 Moir.
