Lewis Hamilton remains in pursuit of an unprecedented eighth F1 drivers’ title, although time is against the veteran with retirement edging ever closer.

Following a torrid 2025 debut season at Ferrari that yielded zero podiums and a sixth-place championship finish, Hamilton faces his most challenging crossroads yet. 

At 40 years old, the seven-time champion endured his worst campaign since entering F1, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc by 86 points and openly describing the experience as a nightmare.

Yet retirement remains firmly off the table. Hamilton declared emphatically that retirement was completely out of the question when speculation mounted after his difficult Abu Dhabi finale.

The sweeping regulation changes arriving in 2026 offer Hamilton’s most realistic pathway to number eight. With lighter, more agile cars and revolutionary hybrid powertrains, the competitive order faces its biggest shake-up in years. 

Ferrari’s decision to halt 2025 development early, focusing resources on these new rules, suggests the Scuderia recognises this opportunity.

Time is against Hamilton to secure an eighth drivers’ title, with there being the possibility that next season could be his last in F1. 

If Ferrari enjoy a positive start to the new regulations, there is the chance that Hamilton extends his career into 2027; however, the odds of another title are not in his favour.
