Sonam Bajwa on ‘Housefull 5’ criticism: ‘I knew what I was signing up for’

The Punjabi film industry star Sonam Bajwa has made her Bollywood debut this year with Housefull 5 a film that went on to greatly earn at the box office.

The success was not without its critics though as some people in the audience voiced their displeasure over the film’s depiction of women.

The critics took the filmmakers to task for showing female characters as mere objects resorting to stereotypes and employing a kind of comedy that was predominantly based on women’s bodies thus denying the women characters’ any other role in the story except that of being glamorous.

Why Sonam chose to do ‘Housefull 5’

Sonam despite the criticism mentioned that she had no regrets about the film being her debut in Bollywood mainly because it allowed her to act along with experienced actors like Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh.

She confessed the criticism during the interview with News18 Showsha but still claimed that the variety of opinions is intrinsic to the film industry.

“I’m not here to sit and judge why some people are saying these things. They absolutely have the right to express their opinions. But audiences do watch films where girls look extremely glamorous and don’t have the same weight in scenes when compared to the male actors,” she said.

Sonam made it clear that she entered the project with totally clear expectations being very much aware of the Housefull franchise and its ensemble format.

She accepted the fact that the major focus would still be on the male leads and her appearance would be minor but she thought it was a fair compromise for a first Hindi film.

Moreover, she said that the viewers’ next project, Ek Deewani Ki Deewaniyat will treat them with a much more powerful and performance-driven character of hers.
