Payne Haas is reportedly set to sign just a one-year extension with the Brisbane Broncos in what shapes as a concerning blow for the NRL premiers’ fans. The star front-rower was seriously considering a move to R360 before the breakaway rugby comp was forced to delay its commencement.
It seemed all-but assured that Haas would re-sign with the Broncos for 2027 and beyond, but The Daily Telegraph reported a huge curve ball in the situation on Saturday. According to the report, Haas will only sign a one-year extension for 2027 that leaves his long-term future up in the air.

R360 has been pushed back to 2028 at the earliest, which lines up with a one-year deal for Haas finishing at the of 2027. Officials of the rugby rebel comp were reportedly willing to offer Haas a staggering $3 million per season, which equates to about $5 million in the NRL as it’s also tax-free.
The Broncos are said to be offering Haas $1.2 million on his new deal – a slight upgrade from the $1.1 million he’ll earn in 2026. But it pales in comparison to $3 million per year, and Haas appears to be keeping his options firmly open.
The NSW State of Origin forward is believed to be focused on setting up his young family as best as possible. As well as having two small children of his own, he also looks after two of his teenage brothers.

Broncos’ boss last update on Payne Haas’ future
Speaking in November, Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy said the club was giving Haas as much time as he needed. “His performances at the back-end of the year were enormous,” Donaghy told SEN radio. “We’re in constant conversation or dialogue with both Payne and his management. We’d love for Payne to stay, we’ve made no secret of that.
“He’s a Bronco through and through, he’s been great for the club and I feel in fairness the club has been great for him. It’s a wonderful relationship very much built on mutual respect and admiration and we’d very much like Payne to stay here.
“We’ll let him have a bit of a break and when he comes up for air we’ll get back in contact and start working that through. But hopefully he stays… it would feel wrong for him not to be a Bronco but there are some big decisions ahead for Payne and we’ll give him the time and respect to be able to go through that process and make those.”
