Basketballers across Antigua will have an opportunity to lock horns in 1v1 battle when local administrators, Nickon McGregor and Carlena Humphreys, hosts the Battle to the Top 1v1 Basketball Tournament on August 10 at the JSC Sports Complex.
The tournament, the first of it’s kind in Antigua, will pay out a cash prize of $700 to the winner.
Humphreys, while speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sport Show, explained how the exciting tournament will be played.
“1v1, if you look it up, is becoming a big thing and also, you know we love to trash-talk here so we thought to ourselves, why not put everybody to the test and see who really is the best of the best. We are going to have a few rounds happening and we want to have a max of 32 [teams], so depending on if we reach that quota, we’re going to have different rules going out in terms of each round. In the first round, it is going to be four minutes per game and the winners will be the first to 11 points and you’ll have four minutes to play in this game and if by the time the four minutes is up we don’t reach 11 as yet, whosoever has the most points wins and advance to the next round,” she said.
Humphreys said the aim is to have at least 31 registered players on the night as they hope to capitalize on the competitive nature of the players. She said the competition will get more exciting the closer it gets to a climax.
“When we reach the semifinals we are going with the first team to 16 [points] because now we are going to only have eight players so we have to hype it up a bit more. Also, for those top 16 who makes it to the semifinals, they are going to get a complimentary basketball jersey as well. Seven hundred dollars [for the winners] and we also have some trophies as well to distribute, not only to the winners of the tournament but we are also going to have different individual prizes in terms of who would have scored the most points, the most exciting play and different things,” she said.
The first game is slated to start at 5:45 pm while players will be required to pay a $50 registration fee. The deadline for registration is August 7 and interested players can call 779-7123 or 770-2928 for more details.
