Awsten Knight promoted the band’s new single
Awsten Knight weighed in on Waterparks’ return to music as the alternative music scene continues to thrive in a new Warped Tour-esque era.
The rock band, who have previously called themselves “God’s favorite boyband,” released a new track — Red Guitar. It comes as their first release since their 2023 album, Intellectual Property. “This is the first song back from the best band in the world, Waterparks,” Awsten shared in a statement.
He continued to reflect on the years the band has battled through, including last year when both himself and his devoted fanbase started an internet conspiracy that Otto Wood, the band’s drummer, was a serial killer. Sticking to the bit, Awsten said, “After a year of trials and tribulations, we have arisen from the smoke, like Captain America — maybe Iron Man instead.”

Further dawdling on about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he said, “I haven’t seen most of those movies. However Infinity War ended, probably. RIP Ant Man. This is the best song from a band in the last 10 years, ask anyone. Either this song or the next one will be our biggest one, again, ask anyone. RIP Iron Man. Stream the song until we make physicals and then go buy one of those. It’s a plaque attack, baby. I love you. God help us all. Thanks!”

Awsten is known for his out-of-pocket statements. For example, his response to the viral lie about his drummer took the shape of yet another intriguing statement.
Awsten told the Mirror US at the time, “We have no comment at this time. All I’ll say is that Geoff and I are both so sorry and hope everyone can find comfort in the fact that those people died doing what Otto loved. Thank you for your privacy during these unprecedented times.”
While Otto isn’t actually a serial killer, the whole scenario kicked off due to a real life murderer. The musician shares his name with a notorious criminal from the era of the Great Depression in North Carolina.
This original Otto Wood was embroiled in legal issues early on, culminating in a second-degree murder conviction in 1923. After several daring prison escapes, his life ended at the hands of law enforcement.
Solidly an alt band, Waterparks, who were on the come up during the original Warped Tour era, have broke ever-so slightly into the mainstream. Their 2019 album, FANDOM, garnered online buzz after their track, I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Want to Die Anymore, went viral on TikTok.
In 2021, the band released an album called Greatest Hits, which is a collection of new tracks and does not revisit their old tunes as the name would typically suggest. Their 2023 Intellectual Property release came with more online ruckus as their track, Funeral Grey, picked up attention.
