A quartet of individual state champions highlighted the 15 Chattanooga-area athletes who were among the all-state cross country and golf selections announced early Sunday morning by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.
In his debut at the TSSAA Class AA boys’ golf state tournament, Walker Valley freshman Cody Walter was the medalist as he finished at 6-under-par 138 in the 36-hole event last October at Sevierville Golf Club’s River Course. Walter was boosted by his 5-under 67 on the first day of competition.
Signal Mountain junior Sam Otwell joined Walter as a medalist in Sevierville by becoming his program’s first individual state champ. Otwell finished at 1-under 143 in the Class A boys’ tournament, highlighted by his opening 68 with eight birdies. He helped the Eagles win the team title as well.

In all, seven area golfers garnered all-state honors, including the Baylor boys’ duo of freshman Zack Bourgeois and junior Brooks Englert, who finished third and fifth, respectively, at the Division II-AA boys’ state tournament.
In girls’ golf, Boyd Buchanan freshman Alli Troxell made the Division II-A all-state team after finishing fourth in Sevierville, and the standout for the Lady Buccaneers was joined in all-state recognition by her sister Charli Troxell, a junior who represented Ooltewah in the Class AA event and tied for fifth.
Baylor junior Katie Tuder was the area’s other all-state honoree in golf as she tied for fifth in the Division II-AA girls’ tournament.
Meanwhile, McCallie junior Drew Beroset and Cleveland senior Owen Clemons led the area’s eight all-state selections in cross country.
Beroset won the DII-AA boys’ meet in November, blazing to a time of 15 minutes, 3.60 seconds in the 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) race at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.
Clemons bookended his prep cross country career with his second individual state title as he won the Class AAA boys’ meet with a time of 15:06.37. Across all classifications, only Beroset had a faster time in TSSAA state competition.
Baylor senior Marshall McConville, a state runner-up with a time of 15:25, was joined on the DII-AA boys’ all-state team by McCallie seniors Taylor Combs (who finished fourth in 15:37.13) and Henry Webb (fifth in 15:37.61).
Baylor freshman Addy Cotter, who was the Division II-AA girls’ runner-up at 17:28, was joined in all-state girls’ cross country recognition by two area seniors who had fourth-place individual showings at state. Signal Mountain’s Maxine Richards finished in 19:10 for the Class AA girls’ team champions, while Anna Shaw of Arts & Sciences had a time of 20:39 in the Class A meet.
