Assuming the royal commission into which Anthony Albanese has been forced is a serious attempt to “examine the circumstances surrounding the antisemitic Bondi terrorist attack” — the third of four key areas identified in its remit — there are several clear targets for investigation.
The first is the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), led by Mike Burgess since September 2019 when he replaced Duncan Lewis. ASIO investigated one of the alleged perpetrators of the Bondi attack in 2019, declared him no threat and seemingly failed to monitor him afterward, including when he travelled in 2025 to an area of the Philippines connected with Islamic State militants.
