ALEXANDRA Speedway is facing an extensive repair after falling victim to the weekend’s tragic Longwood bushfires in Victoria.

While incredible firefighting efforts saved much of the Alexandra township, located 100km north east of Melbourne, the area’s historic speedway suffered significant infrastructure and plant damage.

Included in the damage was the total loss of a water truck, a pair of rollers, extensive wiring for multiple electrical systems, trackside infrastructure and signage, plus vegetation around the venue grounds.

Founded in 1969, the 570-metre-long speedway has been a mainstay of the regional speedway scene, featuring both a traditional oval and a unique dogleg layout.

The venue hosts the 100-lapper event annually, plus a three-hour relay race.

The club has vowed to rebuild, with strong support from the motorsport community already coming forward.

Nearby, Victorian Super Tin Top Championship-winning driver Glen Postlethwaite sadly lost their house in the blaze.

A minor saving grace is that he was able to rescue his race car, with a GoFundMe campaign started to assist in the family’s rebuilding.
