It was a big night for Australia’s Rose Byrne. After breaking into Hollywood with Bridesmaids 15 years ago, Byrne won her first Golden Globe for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, as One Battle After Another and Hamnet marched on triumphantly towards the Oscars and British streaming drama Adolescence continued its awards season success.

Byrne, whose Australian breakthrough was opposite Heath Ledger in the 1999 classic Two Hands, played a stressed out psychotherapist in a tense film that was surprisingly classified as a musical or comedy at the Globes.
“I didn’t sing,” Byrne said in a sweet speech that noted the film cost “like, $8.50″ and her parents in Australia had gone to the trouble of signing up to streaming service Paramount+ so they could watch the awards.

Did any other Aussies win?

Byrne was the only one of the Australian nominees to win at the awards. Also in contention were Jacob Elordi (both Frankenstein and The Narrow Road to the Deep North), Sarah Snook (All Her Fault), Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams) and Nick Cave (also Train Dreams).

How was Nikki Glaser as host?

Host Nikki Glaser played it safe during troubled times in the US but was funny as she poked barbs at Hollywood stars, joking in her opening monologue that Leonardo DiCaprio had achieved so much before his girlfriend turned 30.

Who were the big winners in film?

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another won best film (comedy or musical) and three other awards: best director, screenplay and supporting actress for Teyana Taylor. Hamnet won best film (drama) and best actress for Jessie Buckley. Timothee Chalamet won best actor in a motion picture (musical or comedy) for Marty Supreme, while Brazil’s Wagner Moura won the drama equivalent for The Secret Agent.

Julia Roberts was beaten by Jessie Buckley but brought the audience to their feet – she’s now a beloved Hollywood veteran – when she presented late in the ceremony. Stellan Skarsgård won best supporting actor for Sentimental Value.

Which TV shows won?

The television categories were dominated by Adolescence, which won best limited series (drama) and three acting awards for young Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. One of the awards’ most stirring speeches was by Jack Thorne, who created the show with Graham.

The other big TV winners were the intense medica drama The Pitt, which won best TV drama and best actor in a TV drama for Noah Wyle, and Hollywood satire The Studio, which won best TV series (musical or comedy) and best actor in the category for Seth Rogen.
