Another new week, with eight games on Monday’s L-L League girls basketball schedule. Five section games. Three nonleague games. And a huge scoring output by the league’s leading scorer. Here’s the roundup, with plenty of notables:
SECTION 1
Cedar Crest 46, Hempfield 27 — The host Falcons fell behind 10-8 after the first quarter, and then used a 14-2 second-quarter clip to seize control for good and maintain their 2-game lead in the section race. Kaila Francis (19 points) and Elli Malinoski (14 points) spearheaded Cedar Crest, which outscored the Black Knights 38-17 after the first quarter, as the Falcons pocketed their fourth win in a row. Maggie Brennan scored 10 points for Hempfield.
McCaskey 51, Lebanon 47 — Make that three wins in a row for the host Red Tornado, who overcame Olive Brandt’s scoring binge to knock the Cedars back another game in the section hunt. Brandt hit five 3-pointers and poured in a career-high 43 points — including 12-for-14 at the foul line, netting all but four of Lebanon’s total points — but McCaskey made its 22-15 halftime lead stand up. The 43 points were the most scored by an L-L player this season; Pequea Valley’s Janae Patterson had a 38-point night earlier this month. It was the fifth time this season Brandt, an Elizabethtown College recruit, scored 30 or more points in a game. Brandt leads the league in scoring (25.9 points a game), 3-pointers (48) and free throws made (91). Meanwhile, Anastasia Cruz and Sarai Lewis popped in 17 points apiece for the Tornado, who opened up some breathing room with a 14-11 third-quarter clip. With Brandt scoring at will, the Cedars had a 21-point fourth-quarter output. But McCaskey was able to slam the door and keep its winning streak alive.
Manheim Township 48, Penn Manor 42 — A clutch win for the Blue Streaks, who snapped a 2-game slide to take over sole possession of second place behind Cedar Crest in the section chase. Township started the night in a 3-way tie for second with the Comets and Lebanon; when the Cedars fell to McCaskey, and the Streaks won, Township ended up in solo second. Ciniya Robinson (three 3-pointers, 20 points) and Julia Weaver (10 points) paced the Streaks, who vaulted to an 18-3 first-quarter lead, and then held off Penn Manor late. Alayzha Twyman (11 points) and Joelle Kroesen (10 points) keyed the host Comets, who now find themselves tied with Lebanon for third place.

SECTION 4
Annville-Cleona 52, Octorara 16 — The host Dutchmen sprinted to a 33-10 lead at the half, and then sealed the deal with a 16-2 third-quarter spree to remain within shouting distance of the lead pack in the section hunt. Georgia Sellers (career-high 17 points) and Caitlin Shay (season-high 11 points) paced A-C, which earned its third victory in a row. Sophie Ruscitelli scored 8 points for the Braves.
Lancaster Mennonite 33, Lancaster Country Day 17 — Abigail Heisey (career-high 13 points) and Feven Workalemahu (career-high 12 points) sparked the Blazers, who had a 10-0 lead after the first quarter, a 16-4 cushion at the half, and they snapped a 4-game slide. Rosa Marinez scored 9 points for the host Cougars.
NONLEAGUE
Pequea Valley 74, Garden Spot 44 — The Braves outscored the host Spartans 50-30 over the middle two quarters — including a 25-13 second-quarter run for a 41-18 lead at the half — and PV picked up its 10th victory in a row in the process. Janae Patterson (27 points), Lauren Cazanave (three 3-pointers, career-high 13 points) and Shelyce Burke (12 points) paced the Braves; Laina Steiner bucketed 17 points for Garden Spot.
Columbia 50, Dayspring Christian Academy 28 — The host Crimson Tide opened the game on a 30-7 spurt and never looked back for their third straight victory. Marianha Crawley (season-high 14 points), Ava Broome (11 points) and Lexie Droege (10 points) keyed Columbia’s balanced attack against Dayspring, which was coming off a clutch CCAC victory against previously unbeaten New Covenant Christian.
Warwick 61, Donegal 27 — That’s eight wins in a row for the host Warriors, who outscored the Indians 33-8 over the middle two quarters to pull away for good. Mia Warfel matched her career-high with 25 points, plus four 3-pointers, Grace Myers chipped in with 12 points, and Mac Szobocsan added 11 points and 11 rebounds for Warwick. Hailey Bomberger buried four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 20 points for Donegal.

* Believe it or not, if Northern Lebanon beats Manheim Central, and if Lancaster Catholic tops Lampeter-Strasburg — wait for it — the Vikings, Barons, Crusaders and Pioneers would be in a funky 4-way tie for first place in Section 3. It could happen. Stay tuned. … Ephrata will look to stay a game behind Warwick in the Section 2 hunt at E-town, and Cocalico and Conestoga Valley need wins to remain in the thick of that section chase; CV is at Ephrata on Friday, so this is a key week for the Buckskins. … Columbia will be right back at it; the Tide will go for their fourth win in a row over in Fawn Grove vs. K-D.
