The Blue Jays have a great option to give their bullpen a boost after missing on Edwin Diaz & Robert Suarez.

The Toronto Blue Jays may have the best pitching staff in the American League with all the additions they’ve made this offseason. First, Toronto inked Dylan Cease to a $200 million+ deal to kick things off, then the Blue Jays agreed to contracts with Tyler Rogers and Cody Ponce for $36 million and $30 million deals.

Dylan Cease will likely serve as the Blue Jays’ new ace for years to come, but Rogers and Ponce are under-the-radar additions who will make a huge impact in 2026.

Tyler Rogers Signing Tabbed ‘Sneaky Good’

In a recent article by Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, the Blue Jays adding reliever Tyler Rogers to a three-year, $36 million deal is one of eight signings across MLB tabbed as ‘Sneaky Good’:

“To this end, Tyler Rogers’ job won’t be to succeed where Jeff Hoffman ultimately failed in closing games. But he’ll be another quality option for John Schneider, if for no other reason than he might be the most disaster-proof reliever in MLB.”

In 2025, Rogers made 81 appearances between the Giants and the New York Mets and posted a 1.98 ERA across 77.1 innings. For his seven-year career, the submariner has a 2.76 ERA over 424 total innings.

“Rogers’ 83.5 mph sinker isn’t going to put a dent in a car door, but that same car door won’t know what hit it any more than the typical batter does. There isn’t a more extreme arm slot in the league than Rogers’ submarine release. And what he lacks in whiffs, he makes up for in soft contact.”

The Blue Jays also have a lot of powerful right-handed pitchers in their rotation and bullpen (Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Cody Ponce), so Tyler Rogers’ change of pace will surely leave hitters in a bind.

Will Tyler Rogers be the Blue Jays Closer?

It’s unlikely that Tyler Rogers will dethrone Jeff Hoffman from his closer role, especially after Hoffman just posted a 33-save season, and Rogers has just 19 for his career.

However, Rogers will be another option for manager John Schneider to use late in games, and it’s important to note that Rogers not trying to throw anything overpowering has kept him on the mound and away from injury, which led to a lucrative $12 million AAV contract.

Toronto doesn’t seem to be done making big-time moves either. They have steadily been linked to top free agent Kyle Tucker, and are still awaiting the decision on their own free agent in Bo Bichette.

There are just five and some change weeks left until Spring Training. Now that certainly isn’t the deadline for players to sign, but a lot of MLB teams like to have their rosters sorted out by then.
