F1 fans have predicted that Fernando Alonso will be the next driver to announce his retirement from grand prix racing.
Spanish veteran Alonso is entering a record-extending 23rd F1 season in 2026, by the end of which, he is expected to reach 449 grand prix starts from his current 425.
Alonso is hoping that his Aston Martin team will be able to challenge for the world championship after an aggressive period of investment by owner Lawrence Stroll, including signing Adrian Newey.
Alonso’s current contract with the team, signed in April 2024, expires at the end of the current season, during which he will turn 45 in July.
The last 45-year-old to race in a grand prix was Alonso’s fellow two-time world champion Graham Hill at the 1975 Brazilian GP.
Should Alonso continue onto race in 2027, he will become the first 46-year-old since Maurice Trintignant at the 1964 Italian GP.
In a recent poll by RacingNews365, F1 fans have predicted that Alonso will be the next driver to call time on his career, coming out on top of a field of F1 veterans, including old rival Lewis Hamilton and Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg.
