The Melbourne Renegades have told Yahoo Sport Australia that Harry Dixon has been released from hospital after a nasty incident in the BBL on Thursday night that had cricket fans and commentators concerned. The 20-year-old was batting for the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers when he was struck in the throat and neck by a delivery from Mahli Beardman.
The 136km/h delivery snuck under the grill of Dixon’s helmet after he tried to pull out of his shot. The ball hit Dixon flush in the throat and neck region and caused immediate concern amongst the players in the vicinity.

Scorchers players immediately rushed to his aid as Dixon received medical treatment on-field for a number of minutes. The 20-year-old was eventually forced to retire hurt on 1 from 2 balls and was later taken to hospital as a precaution.

Theo Doropoulos reported on Channel 7: “An ambulance has been called. He will go to hospital for assessment. He has said he’s feeling a bit better but they would just like to be super cautious with him.”
The Renegades later confirmed that Dixon was feeling better, but would continue to be monitored. On Friday the club told Yahoo that Dixon had been released from hospital after scans came back all clear, and said the young gun was resting at home nursing some bruising.
Ricky Ponting said on Channel 7 on Thursday night: “He looks a bit distressed doesn’t he? We just saw the last bloke to walk over to him then was Mahli Beardman. Tapped him on the back and said ‘I’m sorry mate’. It’s all part of the game, no one wants to see anyone get hurt or get hit. You can’t put any blame on him (Beardman).”
Cricket fans send well-wishes to Harry Dixon
Dixon and Beardman were teammates for Australia in the Under-19 World Cup in 2024, which the Aussies won. Fans have taken to social media to wish Dixon the best after the nasty scenes.
“Hope you’re all good Harry, never good seeing someone hit like that,” one person wrote. Another said: “Best wishes Harry.” While a third added: “Hope he is ok. Credit to the Scorchers players for looking out for him.”
The Renegades lost by 50 runs as the Scorchers confirmed their place in the BBL finals. Finn Allen blasted 101 off 53 balls to lead Perth to a commanding total of 7-219. In response, Jake Fraser-McGurk whacked 42 off 18 but the Renegades never looked likely of causing an upset.
