The works of one of the “most celebrated portrait painters of his time” have gone on display at a museum.

John Singer Sargent: An American in Worcestershire, opens at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday and runs until the 14 June.

The exhibition celebrates the artist’s visits to the region and includes works not seen before in the city, Museums Worcestershire said.

Sargent, who died in 1925, external, became most renowned as a portraitist, with a “remarkable ability to capture the individual likeness and character of his sitters,” a spokesperson added.
