Current and hopeful gun owners in NSW are now unable to apply for firearms if it put them above the proposed limit of 10 per person.

The new reforms are part of the state government’s gun reforms, which come into effect on Monday while still before the parliament.

It means those applying for a firearm permit will have to do so through a relaunched public online national firearms register (Gun Safe).

Submissions that would exceed an individual’s 10 firearm limit will be immediately denied.

“Such applications are taken to have never been made and no refund will be provided,” police said.

The reintroduction of Gun Safe is also expected to cause “longer than usual” processing times for Permits to Acquire (PTA).

“Given the extended processing times, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a PTA only when genuinely necessary and after carefully considering the new limits,” police said.

Only those with the following genuine reasons can exceed the 10 firearms limit: Primary production, occupational requirements related to rural purposes, animal welfare, sport or target shooting, business or employment, vertebrate pest animal control.

“There will be no immediate seizure of firearms for those currently above the limits,” police said.

“Further information about compliance and the buyback scheme will be provided before the new limits take effect.”
