If Australians cut their alcohol consumption by 1L of pure alcohol a year, deaths from four key cancers would drop by up to 4%, a Melbourne study shows.

The equivalent of 2.5 1L bottles of spirits, the reduction would see colorectal, upper aerodigestive tract, male liver and female breast cancer deaths fall, especially among older people, their findings show.

La Trobe University authors tracked 70 years of Australian data on mortality, alcohol and tobacco consumption and health expenditure.

They then modelled associations between alcohol consumption and deaths from four alcohol-related cancers.
