Death in Paradise’s Élizabeth Bourgine has confirmed that her character won’t be getting the romance she’s been yearning for in season 15, set to debut next week.

The Catherine Bordey actor told Radio Times and other press: “I keep on asking for a romance for Catherine. She’s desperately wanting one or two, so I hope one day she’ll have a lovely one, [but] it will not be in this series. I’m sorry, but no, not yet… maybe later.”

This may come as a disappointing surprise to fans particularly after season 14 had teased a potential romance for the fan favourite.

“I’ve started seeing someone,” she told characters Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas and Officer Darlene in the previous season. “It’s early days, we’re having fun.”

It’s unclear whether or not that romance has fizzled out or if it just doesn’t play a major part in the storyline, but that doesn’t mean Bourgine will be completely out of the action.

Once again she will be there to provide council to Commissioner Selwyn as the synopsis reads: “Returning Commissioner Selwyn Patterson confronts the impact of his recent period of absence, and after some tough love from old friend, Catherine Bordey, he’s determined to win back the trust of the island.”

Elsewhere, DS Naomi Thomas and Officer Sebastian Rose have their hands full with a new member of the Saint Marie police force Sergeant Mattie Fletcher.

However, the synopsis reveals that the new recruit will have a hard time meshing into the team when “shadows from her past begin to reveal themselves”.

Garton’s debut overlaps with Holder’s exit as she steps away from the BBC crime series after seven years.

The news was announced via Instagram and fans were quick to flood the comment sections to express their sadness.

“No, I’m gutted,” said one commenter. “She’s a breath of fresh air and her character has developed brilliantly over the series.”

“Darlene was a PERFECT character for the show!” said another. “She had her ‘network’ but she also showed a lot of common sense and compassion. I’ll miss her! Thanks for your wonderful work, Ginny!”

Death in Paradise season 15 airs on Friday 30 January on BBC One. Death in Paradise and its spin-offs Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise are all available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
