Jenna Ortega‘s unhinged, R-rated horror movie is now one of HBO Max’s top films in the world, earning incredible global success. Ortega’s movies and TV shows have taken the world by storm in recent years, from Wednesday becoming Netflix’s most-watched show of all time, to the most recent Scream movies reviving the long-dormant slasher franchise.

Another recent film for her, though, was 2025’s Death of a Unicorn. The horror comedy features Ortega as Ridley, the teenage daughter of a lawyer, Elliot Kintner (Paul Rudd), who gets invited to the Leopold family estate by Elliot’s boss. On their way over, they accidentally run over a unicorn, bringing the body to the estate, alongside the attention of its enraged parent.

Now, FlixPatrol reveals Death of a Unicorn has become the Number 3 movie in the world on HBO Max, mostly due to its recent international release on the platform. As of January 26, 2026, the movie has made it to Number 1 in 20 countries around the world, including Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Chile, the Bahamas, Peru, and Salvador.

The movie isn’t in the Top 10 in the US, however it is available to watch on HBO Max there. Despite mixed reception from critics, currently holding a score of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, Death of a Unicorn’s reviews didn’t deter audiences from a more positive viewpoint. The film holds a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes from viewers.

As for its HBO Max performance, the film taking third place on the platform is rather significant given the number of award-winning movies currently popular on the streaming service. Death of a Unicorn trails behind One Battle After Another and Sinners in the Top 10, both of which are considered some of the best movies of 2025.

It’s also ahead of other acclaimed films that came out in the same year, including the horror movie Weapons and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon. Although the Ortega-led movie is mostly aided by its international performance, its release in overseas countries has given it a boost worthy of competing with some of 2025’s best movies.

Given how popular Death of a Unicorn is on HBO Max right now, it could see an even broader audience start tuning in as its success continues. Since it’s Number 1 in every country whose Top 10 list it’s on, Ortega’s horror movie may have guaranteed itself relatively long-term success in the wider world.
