Glenn Maxwell has decided where his future in the BBL lies after speculation he could be on the move away from the Melbourne Stars. The 37-year-old has been with the Stars since 2012, after starting his BBL career with one season at the Melbourne Renegades.

He’s played 123 games for the Stars, scoring over 3000 runs for the Melbourne franchise. But despite his illustrious record in white-ball cricket – both internationally and domestically – he’s never been able to help the Stars win the BBL title.

The Stars are the only franchise without a BBL title in the competition’s 14-year history, and former national teammate Aaron Finch suggested last week that it might be time for a change for both Maxwell and the Stars. News Corp reported last week that Maxwell had received an offer from the Sydney Thunder that would make him “close to if not the highest-paid player” in the BBL next season.

But Maxwell and the Stars announced on Tuesday that he’d re-signed for another two seasons. “The Melbourne Stars have been a massive part of my cricket career and I’m really passionate about this team having success,” Maxwell said. “I think this current group is building towards something special and I’m confident we’re in a place to contend for the title in the next two seasons.”

Neroli Meadows of ESPN reported on Monday evening that Maxwell had received a “lucrative offer from another club”. BBL clubs have until 5pm on Tuesday to re-sign players, before an eight-day free agency window.

Aaron Finch had said Glenn Maxwell might need ‘fresh start’

Finch had previously asked on Channel 7: “He’s still a big part of the Melbourne Stars, but does he want a change? He played the first ever Big Bash tournament for the Melbourne Renegades, and to me it might be a time when Maxi says ‘you know what, just get me away from the Melbourne Stars’.

“Maybe there’s too much emphasis on him, and too much pressure to win a title. There’s pressure on every team, but the fact they keep wheeling out quality sides on paper and not being able to get the job done, that’s alarming.

“That’s not on Maxi. It’s not his fault, and none of this is a direct impact because of Maxi. But maybe a fresh start where you go, ‘I’m going to go and give my absolute all for another team for another two or three years’.”

The Stars have already re-signed Peter Siddle to play at 42 years old, and inked new deals with Hilton Cartwright, Sam Harper and Campbell Kellaway. The Thunder are said to be chasing Test bowler Michael Neser, while David Warner has re-signed to go around again in the 2026/27 tournament.
