The Government’s proposed $6 billion allocation for sport in the 2026 National Budget, including the completion of a new boxing gym at Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam, is expected to provide a significant boost to local sporting infrastructure and athlete development.

The allocation forms part of the wider $1.558 trillion national budget and continues the State’s investment in the sports sector, with amateur boxing among the disciplines set to benefit directly.

For the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), the inclusion of the Angoy’s Avenue facility represents a long-awaited improvement for athletes and coaches in Berbice, where access to modern training spaces has been limited.

GBA Secretary Stacy Correia said the funding could help strengthen the sport’s foundation, particularly in addressing facility shortages and creating safer, more structured training environments for young athletes.
