Cal Defeats UCLA 60-14
LOS ANGELES – California rugby defeated the UCLA Bruins 60-14 Saturday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Junior Nate Comiskey led the Bears with three tries, while Chris Biller, who came in for Ryan Wenstrom in the 18th minute, added two tries. Seven different players scored tries in the victory, while freshman Oliver Sinclair added five conversions.
Â
The Bears wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as senior Miles Malone scored a try less than two minutes into action. However, a try from UCLA on an errant Cal kick evened up the score three minutes later. The Bears responded with three tries in the span of 12 minutes from Sinclair, senior Oliver Newall, and Comiskey.
Â
UCLA added another try shortly before the half, but tries from Comiskey and Biller helped the Bears build a 36-14 halftime lead.
Â
The Bears shut out the Bruins in the second half, playing excellent team rugby behind tries from Comiskey, Biller, sophomore Oliver Kirk, and junior Elias Smith.
Â
“UCLA gave us a game,” head coach Jack Clark said. “They deserve the credit for how poor we looked occasionally. We wish them the best going forward.”
Â
Next up, the Bears continue their road trip, heading to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada on Saturday, Feb. 8. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
