PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team is tied for second place after the first round of the Compadres Collegiate on Sunday at Playa Paraiso Golf Club.
The Vaqueros posted an opening round of 299 and are tied with North Texas with both teams seven shots behind UTSA for first place.
Sophomore Gabriel Dulon Villoslada is tied for third place after posting an even par 72 and is just two shot off the lead held by UTSA’s Joshua Hong.
Junior McAllen Memorial alum Esteban Gonzalez is two shots back of Villoslada and tied for eighth after opening with a two-over par 74. Freshman Jorge Martin Sampedro is tied for 21st after posting an opening round 76.
Junior Rodolphe Cicala is tied for 24th with a first round 77. Junior Eddie Lai, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 28th with a first round 78 and freshman Brock Porter is tied for 30th with a first round 79.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course for the second round on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
