Audiences are not seeking Shelter.

2026’s Shelter, which debuted on January 30, is a new action thriller from Snitch director Ric Roman Waugh. The movie stars action icon Jason Statham as former assassin Michael Mason, who protects an innocent girl from the crossfire when he is targeted by his old agency. The movie’s release comes in the wake of several successful non-franchise Statham action movies, namely 2024’s The Beekeeper and 2025’s A Working Man.

Per The Numbers, as of Sunday morning, Shelter is projected to earn a 3-day debut total of $5.505 million at the domestic box office. It is currently in a neck-and-neck race for No. 5 on the domestic chart with Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is in its seventh weekend.

Even though its 3-day gross could fluctuate slightly by the end of Sunday, it is securely set to earn Jason Statham his worst wide release domestic debut since 2008, when the fantasy video game adaptation In the Name of the King debuted in 1,632 theaters with a gross of $3 million. Because only one of his earlier wide debuts grossed below $5 million, Shelter is now Statham’s third-worst wide debut of all time.

Below, see a breakdown of Statham’s five worst wide debuts ever and how those movies ultimately performed worldwide:

It ultimately remains to be seen how high Shelter can climb by the end of its run at the box office. However, the new Jason Statham action movie comes with a reported budget of $50 million, which could be a huge impediment. Because movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters, this could potentially place its estimated break-even point as high as $125 million.

It is highly unlikely to hit that goal, especially since it is currently uncertain if it will even earn its raw budget back by earning $50 million worldwide. While it is possible that Shelter could do so, precedent suggests that it could be difficult. Of the 14 Jason Statham movies that had wide debuts below $10 million, only six grossed more than $50 million worldwide.

However, it is possible that Shelter’s underperforming domestic debut could be a side effect of the dangerous snowstorm that has wracked much of the United States. The movie is performing well with the audiences that have seen it so far (earning an 89% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore), which could allow it to build word of mouth over time.
