NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men’s and women’s tennis teams both won the doubles point, which propelled them both to a season opening win over Dillard. The men won by a 5-2 score line while the women won 4-3.
Â
The men had an incredible comeback at flight three to snag the doubles point. Gonzalo Cotter and Carlos Melgosa found themselves in a 5-0 hole, but found a way out by winning the next seven games in succession to grab the first point.
Â
“I told Gonzalo and Carlos it’s your perseverance and ability to stay focused,” said Coach Burzis Kanga. “If you stay true to yourself, you can find your way back into a match. They took it one point at a time.”
Â
Jacob Rouleau-Mailly and Marius Gyllerup also finished strong with a 6-3 victory at flight two doubles.
Â
In singles, Melgosa and Gonzalo Cotter were dominant on their courts. Cotter was off the court first after a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Melgosa followed after only conceding three games in a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
Â
The Bleu Devils won the next two matches to finish at flights three and six to close the gap to 3-2 in the match, but Rouleau-Mailly ensured the Privateers were victorious on the day. He broke the serve of Arya Siddharth in the late stage of the third set to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Â
Beltran Fernandez wrapped up the day by winning three consecutive games in the third set to come back from a break down and beat Nour Ibrahim 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4.
Â
The women also had a strong start in doubles keyed by the play of Kateryna Kalistratova and Nouray Khaled. The pair, playing at flight one, took control early and never relented in a 6-1 victory.
Â
Dillard won at flight two, which put the deciding match on flight three. Danique Vermue and Naila Krifa, both newcomers to the program, teamed up for a 6-4 win to give the Privateers the first point of the day.
Â
Flights one through three all put up winning performances to seal the match for the Privateers. Fleur Sprengers won 6-3, 6-4. Kalistratova took control in a 6-3, 6-2 win at flight two. Khaled won her match 6-2, 6-2 and the Privateers sealed the victory overall.
Â
“Dillard was really strong and they’ll be in the mix for a national ranking in NAIA,” said Kanga. I think we played well and challenged ourselves. We came through a critical doubles point and we executed a good gameplan.”
Â
Â
Dillard won all three matches at flights four through six. Flight four and six both went three sets.
