A former NRL star has had a frightening encounter after he chased away masked would-be crooks at his home in Brisbane’s east – all while in nothing but his underpants.

David Mead scared off the two people who attempted to break into his residency at 1.42am on Tuesday.

At the time him and his wife Taneal were asleep in bed when Mead said he heard strange sounds downstairs.

In the CCTV footage uploaded to Mead’s Instagram, he could be heard screaming “what the f***”, as a car with the pair screeched and took off.

“WHAT THE **?!” Mead said in a caption on his post.

“Attempted break in last night at our house.

“Young fellas out there don’t get involved with this crap. Don’t waste your future.”

Mead played 147 games for the Gold Coast Titans and 25 for the Brisbane Broncos between 2009 to 2022. He represented Papua New Guinea, PNG Prime Minister’s XIII and Country NSW.

The 37-year-old told Code Sports the incident was “pretty scary” and that he is glad no one got hurt.

“Taneal woke up and said ‘I think someone is in the house’. I heard the door knob turn and then it clicked. I knew straight away someone was in the house,” Mead said.

“I jumped out of bed and went around the corner, I saw the door closing and a shadow running. There’s 18 stairs and I jumped most of them and tripped at the end.

“I’m just glad no-one got hurt. If you hurt them, you can go to jail, or they could badly hurt you.

“The police got there really quickly and were great. They told us there were some people causing havoc around our suburbs.”

High-profile footy players sent Mead their best wishes on Instagram following the scary incident.

“Cuz crazy hope you good brother,” NRL journeyman Joe Ofahengaue said.

“Kids be crazy these days man. Hope you guys are all good bro. Hope that pot plants all good too,” Melbourne Storm star Jahrome Hughes said.

Retired hardman Brad Takairangi added: “They messed with the wrong house my bra hope u guys are good brother”.
