Colorado Avalanche

Head coach Jared Bednar told Denver’s Altitude Sports Radio that captain Gabriel Landeskog and forward Martin Necas will not be in the lineup on Wednesday against the San Jose Sharks, but should be able to play at The Winter Olympics later this month.

Landeskog, 33, is working his way back from an upper-body injury and has missed the team’s past 13 games.

The 6-foot-1 winger missed the last three regular seasons while dealing with knee injuries, before returning in last year’s playoffs.

He has seven goals and 22 points in 41 games this season.

Landeskog was one of Sweden’s first six players to be named to their Olympic roster in June.

Necas, 27, has missed the Avs’ past two games with a lower-body injury and will miss his third consecutive contest Wednesday against the Sharks before the Olympic break.

In 52 games for Colorado this season, Necas has totaled 22 goals and 40 assists for 60 points.

He is set to play for his native Czechia next week, where he will face off against Colorado teammates Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Devon Toews with Team Canada in the tournament opener on Feb. 12.

Marchand, 37, will miss his third straight game with the injury and only has one more chance to return to the lineup on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning before the NHL pauses the season for The Winter Olympics.

The 5-foot-9 winger has 25 goals and 50 points in 45 games this season.

Lundell, 24, is considered to be probable for Wednesday’s game after missing the last three games with an upper-body injury.

The 6-foot-1 centre has 15 goals and 36 points in 52 games this seasons.

Bennet left Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres early with an upper-body injury but is been cleared to play.

He has 19 goals and 42 points in 55 games this season.

Marchand and Bennett are scheduled to play for Canada at The Winter Olympics later this month. Marchand was named to the roster at the end of December while Bennett was added on Tuesday as an injury replacement for Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli.

Lundell is also scheduled to represent Czechia at The Winter Olympics.

Sergei Bobrovsky will be in net on Wednesday when the Panthers take on the Bruins, confirmed head coach Paul Maurice.

Bobrovsky, 37, has lost five of his last six games and has a 20-17-1 record this season with an .872 save percentage and 3.11 goals-against average.

Nashville Predators

The Predators recalled forward Reid Schaefer from the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday.

Schaefer, 22, was drafted 32nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2022 and traded to Nashville, along with defenceman Tyson Barrie and two draft picks, in exchange for blueliner Mattias Ekholm in February of 2023.

The 6-foot-5 winger has four goals and six points in 25 games with the Predators this season.

He also has six goals and 18 points in 21 AHL games this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins are bringing Swedish prospect Melvin Fernstrom over to North America.

The Penguins announced Wedensday that they have assigned the 19-year-old winger to their AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Drafted in the third round by the Vancouver Canucks in 2024, Fernstrom was later traded to Pittsburgh as part of the return package for defenceman Marcus Pettersson.

In 36 games for Orebro HK of the Swedish Hockey League, Fernstrom has recorded three goals and one assist.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Forwards Anthony Cirelli and and Nick Paul will both miss the Lightning’s final game prior NHL’s hiatus for The Winter Olympics against the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

Cirelli, 28, left the Lightning’s 6-5 shootout loss against the Boston Bruins in the Stadium Series with an upper-body injury.

He was originally named to Canada’s team at The Winter Olympics but had to bow out for Panthers forward Sam Bennett due to the injury.

The 6-foot-1 centre has 15 goals and 35 points in 49 games this season.

Paul, 30, left Sunday’s game early with a lower-body injury after recording a goal.
