The linebacker that Josh Allen first hurdled is calling it a career.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Anthony Barr was retiring. The linebacker, the 9th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, had a notable career. He was named to the Pro Bowl four times (2015-2018) while playing for the Minnesota Vikings. He added a one-year stint in Dallas before returning to Minnesota.

While Barr’s play will be remembered fondly in Minnesota, Bills fans remember the linebacker for a completely different reason.

Josh Allen’s second start as quarterback of the Buffalo Bills came on the road against the Vikings. The Vikings found themselves as 17-point favorites in the matchup, with few expecting Allen and the Bills to compete.

That in itself is the beauty of football.

Allen and the Bills dominated the Vikings on their way to a 27-6 victory. There were big plays on both sides of the ball for Buffalo, but only one is still talked about to this day.

With the Bills up 17-0 in the first quarter, Allen and the Bills offense faced a 3rd and 10. When pressure came from the outside, Allen took off up the middle and looked like he would be stopped short by Pro Bowl linebacker Anthony Barr. Allen, however, had other plans and leapt over the linebacker to move the chains.

It was the hurdle seen around the world.

The leap was replayed multiple times on the live broadcast and millions of times since. Barr, to his credit, gave Allen plenty of praise after the season ended.

“I thought he was going to try to run me over and was, like, ‘This is crazy!’ Then he jumped over me, and I was, like, ‘Well, that’s crazy, too,’” Barr told Tim Graham of The Athletic.

“You get got sometimes,” Barr added.

The play, at the time, was certainly crazy, but Barr can take solace in knowing that Allen would go on to hurdle multiple defenders since that point.
