From the 5th to the 9th of August we have on the road what is potentially the single most important preparation race ahead of the Vuelta a España. The Vuelta a Burgos takes the riders through the hilly and mountainous terrain necessary to prepare for the final Grand Tour of the season whilst also helping the riders adapting to the weather conditions. We preview stage 2.

The second stage of the race is the one that suits the sprinters the best and it’s difficult to argue that we will not have a bunch sprint deciding the outcome of this stage. It will be a long day through northwestern Spain…

The stage starts in the town of Cilleruelo de Abajo and finishes in Buniel, with a few rolling hills along the way but a flat – even slightly downhill – finale that will be to the delight of the fast finishers. This will be a day for the sprinters and the only one, with the few riders that made the trip to Spain for the fast finishes having here their best opportunity.

The main favourite to win this stage will be Juan Sebastián Molano, as UAE will have a good leadout but in the Colombian also the sprinter with the biggest name and potentially the best sprint in this peloton. But it’s going to be a very open finale with the Italians Matteo Moschetti and Matteo Malucelli on the hunt for a big win but several riders from several teams having the chance to win on what is a big race. I would expect Astana to have the strongest leadout however.Profile_VueltaABurgos2025stage2
