Efe Ajagba has never forgotten the sound of survival.

Long before Zuffa Boxing brought him to the UFC Apex spotlight, before television cameras and heavyweight rankings, Ajagba worked in a bakery in Nigeria to help his family make ends meet. Mornings were for labor. Evenings were for learning how to fight.

Efe Ajagba and Zuffa Boxing: A Heavyweight Statement Fight

Today, Efe Ajagba returns to Las Vegas not just as a contender, but as a former Olympian representing Nigeria’s fighting spirit on one of boxing’s newest stages. His opponent tonight is former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin, a seasoned veteran with experience at the top of the division.

For Ajagba, the moment carries added weight.

“I lost my dad and I think about him a lot now that I’m here,” Ajagba told Vegas Sports Today. “Especially when it was not easy. When I was trying to focus on boxing, I had to work to help out the family.”

It is not the first time he has fought since his father’s passing, but the memory remains close. Early on, his father questioned whether boxing could provide financial stability. He had once given up the sport himself to protect his family.

“At first he didn’t think I could make money doing this,” Ajagba said. “But when my career started to get going, he was very proud. I’m proud of him too. He did what a man needed to do as a father to protect his family. I am here because of him.”

Efe Ajagba’s Evolution From Olympian to Zuffa Boxing Contender

That foundation shaped the fighter who would become Nigeria’s lone boxing qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games. As a former Olympian, Ajagba built his reputation on discipline and technical growth, not just power.

Now 31, Ajagba believes he has evolved beyond the label of knockout artist. His majority draw against Martin Bakole last year sharpened both his edge and his mindset.

“A draw was devastating,” Ajagba said. “One judge scored it for me, one for him, and it’s a draw? You have to make that make sense.”

Instead of dwelling, he adjusted.

“I’m not leaving it to the judges anymore.”

That fight, he says, changed how the heavyweight division views him.

“They saw I’m not just a big puncher. I can box. Nobody wanted to fight me but Bakole. But I did it. They all know I can bring new stuff.”

Tonight marks his debut under the Zuffa Boxing banner, and Ajagba credits the promotion’s structure for helping him focus.

“They’ve given us a good itinerary. Beautiful facilities. My wife is comfortable. My team is comfortable. I don’t have to worry about extra noise,” he said. “They are top-tier. I can see why people say they’re changing boxing.”

Still, logistics do not throw punches. Martin does.

“Charles Martin has a lot of experience,” Ajagba said. “I’m not going to underestimate him. I’m not going to underestimate any opponent.”

As Zuffa Boxing builds its presence in Las Vegas, Efe Ajagba sees opportunity. Not just for a win, but for momentum.

“This is the first heavyweight fight with Zuffa Boxing for a reason,” Ajagba said. “Don’t miss this fight. It’s going to be an exciting fight.”
